I simply forgot to blog yesterday. This picture was really cute too- but it actually goes better with what I have to say tonight anyway. Carolyn started her preschool this year. This was the picture I took on her first day on Wednesday. She was so excited and that backpack looks so big on her!! I can't believe that I am taking my little girl to SCHOOL three times a week! Just a year from now she will be in kindergarten and a whole new part of life will be beginning for us. It kind of already feels like it's starting now that we are going to an actual school where there are lockers and teachers and hooks and all the things I can actually remember from my own life when I was her age!
Carolyn is loving, loving preschool! I'm glad that I didn't send her last year when she was just 3; she was in the world's most wonderful, loving, amazing daycare center that was just fantastic for her and worked so well for our family while I was working- but I am so happy for her to be here now. It's a little bittersweet, as all parenting transitions (even the welcome ones) tend to be- she is so ready for the challenge of more formal schooling, and handling it very well so far. Her best little church friend is in her class and she is SO happy to see Olivia three times a week. The preschool teacher is very good, and I like the way she's organized her class.
Each kid has a character (Carolyn's is a pink octopus- a good choice since she loves pink!) and when they get to school, they pick up their character sticker thing and put it on the "center" they'd like to explore first. Then when they're done at that place, they move the sticker to the next place they'd like to play. It puts the choices in the child's hands so that they get an idea of the basic truth that choosing one thing means not choosing another. And the teacher has limited spots at each "center" so that if the place you want to go is full, you have to then make a secondary decision (another exceptionally great life skill since so much of the really important stuff in life seems to be figuring out how to adapt when things don't go the way you want them to or expec thtem too). There are some times for formal story time and art time and snack time and Bible time and stuff, but a lot of it is sort of organized free play, which is really fun for the kids and good for them to learn basic social skills as well. I really think this is a good place for Carolyn.
We have intentionally made ourselves a little LESS busy this fall compared to last year, and it has so far been a good move for our family. She has preschool MWF mornings, and we have Kindermusik all together on Tuesday mornings, and she still goes to AWANA Cubbies on Wednesday nights at our church. But I'm not working much at the pharmacy anymore (though I do miss it!), and we stopped all other our activities that were happening on weeknights to have more time as a family, and I think I will appreciate this pace better than the crazy rat race we seemed to be on last year.
I am loving Carolyn's active imagination as she grows in self-confidence and maturity; it is so much fun to be able to see what she is thinking! This week alone we have seen her really make some mental leaps and be more willing and able to share the thoughts that are in her mind.
We've been talking about castles for some time now, and Carolyn is really taking off with the idea. Lately she's been talking to me about whatever we are having for dinner- telling me which things she has in her castle (like spaghetti and chicken pesto), and which things she does not have (like potatoes, beans, and mushrooms). It makes me laugh.
Tonight she told me a whole story about her castle. She told me all about what her room looks like, including a "canaby" bed (this comes from my telling her about how I dreamed as a little girl of having a Canopy bed; I am sure she has no idea what it is), and two potties so she can go to the potty in the middle of the night if necessary. One potty is pink on the outside and white on the inside. The other potty is brown. This potty is for Uncle Bryan, in case he needs to go. :) Uncle Bryan should feel lucky he is included in the "castle list." She told me that it was a "girl party" and "just the girls" were invited. Only Nora and Aunt Michelle were listed by name. And then Uncle Bryan got an honorary invite to the "girl party" because he throws her up high in the air and that is really fun.

Ringling Bros
this picture totally makes me laugh! nora really did have a good time at the circus. she was just tired by this point, and didn't even want the cotton candy (carolyn happily devoured both girls' share) :)
i was mildly disgusted by the way they make the elephants perform. it's like seeing a totally many football player forced to wear a tutu. elephants are amazing, graceful creatures- and i was sort of embarrassed for them.

Farm Fun, Continued
Well, here are some more pictures from yesterday's farm fun. :) It was awesome- they aren't technically "open" with all their usual fall stuff yet, but you can still go and see the animals. So I spent $1 on goat food, and the 3 of us had a marvelous time.
Gotta love that toddler enthusiasm. This is one kid who knows what she wants and hustles off in a hurry to get there!
Carolyn's favorite part of our adventure (obviously) was the hay pile. She found this little hole to hide in, and though I did not intend to have this picture focus on the hay instead of her face, I kind of like it. :)
Nora's favorite part was the goats. She wanted very much to go back to them, so she kept trying to scurry off the hay pile and go in search of the goats.
She can be kind of a stinker sometimes! (But I sure do love her!) She's developing quite a knack for getting herself into trouble. I'm not sure how she does it. Perhaps subpar parental supervision... This was the child that somehow found an EGG in the hay pile. Thankfully I rescued it before she decided to have a tactile experience with the insides of a rotten egg...
Both girls did enjoy feeding the goats, which were very cute and friendly.
Nora especially loved them, and loved feeding them.
She was quite disappointed when we ran out of food (and quarters...) :) I think we may go back on Saturday as a family- the experience was such a hit!

Glee
These pictures speak for themselves. :) I took more from our impromptu trip to Post Family Farms this afternoon after naps and before supper, but these pictures deserve to stand alone. :)

Cruise Wrapup
Really the best way to "capture" our trip is in pictures. So I put together this slideshow of almost 100 of our best ones (of over 1000!) set to music with some captions. It takes about 6 minutes to run, so watch it when you have time, but, just a warning, if you watch it, you might just find yourself browsing cruise websites! It was a wonderful way to see a beautiful place.
I'm more tired than I can remember being in a long time- we got home at about 4:15am today, and were so ramped up on caffeine that I couldn't get to sleep at all. Took an hour long nap this afternoon, but basically I've been running on fumes all day. I'm really ready for bed now!! So enjoy the highlights of our trip. It was a blast- but I think it says something about how much I really do love my life that even after a week of being waited on hand and foot, there is still no place like home- even with all the dishes and diapers and waiting on everyone else hand and foot! It is unbelievably good to be home.

Seattle Again
Well, you may have noticed the lack of updates... sorry Mom... the internet was just abysmal for the last half of our trip. They shut down the streaming video applications in an attempt to salvage some utility of the system that must have broken down or something while we were out at sea- so we couldn't video chat with the girls anymore after about Wednesday, and most days it took about 10 or 15 minutes and multiple tries to get to log on at all. So I didn't post pictures or video or anything- I barely got to even email the girls!
We are back in Seattle now- we enjoyed lunch at Steelhead Diner, one of our favorite Seattle restaurants, and now we're just waiting for our flight, and thanking goodness for free wi-fi (that actually WORKS!) I've almost finished my trip slideshow so that will be ready to post tomorrow. I've made about a bazillion flowers and bows this week in preparation for some craft shows I'm doing (I had time to sit around and craft to my heart's content this week!), and we've had a wonderful time reconnecting with one another and seeing some beautiful places. But I AM READY TO GO HOME NOW. We finally got to video chat with the girls again this afternoon, and I don't think they were nearly as excited to see us on the screen as we were to see them. My arms literally ache to hold my girls! I'm way past the point of enjoying being away now. I just want to be home with them.
So we're gonna try to be smart while being kinda stupid tonight. Our flight lands in Chicago at 11:45pm, and we are going to attempt the late-night trek home. We'll nap on the plane, both drink some coffee before we set out, and we'll be ready to stop at the first sign that either of us is too sleepy (thankfully our bodies are on west coast time now so that will help). I don't want to spend one more minute away from my girls than I have to. But, I also want to get home in one piece... even if it's a few hours later than I'd like... so we are praying for wisdom and protection for the journey. Cannot wait to get home and hug them tight.

Juneau
I'm a little behind on blogging. Internet didn't work well from Juneau until this morning and we've been pretty busy running around, so I kind of let my blog slide a bit. Sorry bout that. Here's the little video from Juneau. The camera promptly ran out of batteries as soon as we were really seeing interesting things. But we still got a little bit of our flight in Juneau done.
In the morning on Wednesday, we did "scenic cruising" through Tracy Arm fjord to Sawyer Glacier. I guess it's kind of unusual to be able to get as close to the glacier as we did, and it was really beautiful.
In the afternoon, we went to Juneau. On many recommendations, we took a float plane trip out to Taku Glacier Lodge for some super fresh salmon and an amazing view of the Juneau ice fields and several glaciers. I'm not a really "brave" person, and I have not liked airplanes since I was a kid. I'm all right with them when they are flying straight and not rocking at all... I was very nervous about a small plane. But the pilot was awesome,
I have pictures, but Blogger isn't wanting to let me upload them now and at 50 cents a minute I don't want to wait too long for him to try! So I'll blog better when we get home. :)
